In 2013, Opel/Vauxhall will roll out its all-new city and, while we expect it to be an efficient urban , reports suggest that it won’t compete with the abundant low-priced offerings in the segment. The design of the Opel/Vauxhall city car is evolving into a “chic, youthful city car,” said company design boss Mark Adams, and it’s also moving upmarket. In a recent with , Adams explained that the will target some of the premium competitors in the segment, including the Fiat 500, Citroen DS3 and Mini Cooper – not cheaper offerings like the Fiat Panda or Citroen C1.

Adams described the company’s decision to target semi-premium players in the segment this way:

Certain quarters of the media are expecting this to be a budget offering, but it’ll be anything but. We’re looking to build the image of our Opel and Vauxhall brands with this car; to show that we can make stylish, desirable and emotional , too. It will be smaller but also more desirable and more expensive than Corsa; not cheaper.

Unfortunately, this decision to move upmarket also implies that the rumored battery-powered vehicle built on Opel’s city car platform will likely be more expensive as well.
